Feed Me, Seymour! (or.. would you pretty-please check my RSS feed?)

by Tori Deaux on June 8, 2007

Short version: I’ve changed my feed set up, so please let me know if you find any problems or odd behaviors. Thank you.

We now return you to the previously scheduled rambling.

Long version: Recent Wordpress releases add an odd new feature — they oh so helpfully cut off feed content at the <!–more__> tag. Now, the <!–more–> tag itself is useful. It splits the post so that only part of it shows on the front page. You click a link that says something like “more…” at the end of the article, and it takes you to the rest of the article. It’s a way of keeping long posts from dominating the blog’s home page.

I’m up in the air about using the <!-more-> tag myself, but since I often write articles I deem “too long” for the front page, I wind up using it, which means I wind up with a bunch of cut off feed content.

Feed subscribers don’t like much like that. They rarely click on”more” to go to the site and read the rest of the article. Some do, of course.. and I thank you, loyal Tweakers!

But the rest of you are missing some of my best stuff: I rarely hit my stride till 500 words… not to mention the sometimes-clever little “MindTweaks” at the end. I can’t leave you unenlightened, so I went on a hunt.

I stalked and captured the solution: yet another WP plugin, this time Full Feed by Ronald at cavemonkey50. Thanks Ronald!

It looks like a well put together bit of plugin, but just to be sure, please let me know if you have any problems.

MindTWEAK:
If you wanna be profound, if you really gotta justify, take a breath and look around, alot of folks deserve to die… FEED ME, Seymour!

I’m not sure if your full feed problem is connected with your Wordpress version. I got tripped up with inavertently offering partial feeds when I intended to offer full feeds. It’s fixed now (heaven nows how) I use the more quicktag all the time, yet my full feed is displayed in my reader. I’m still using Wordpress 2.0

I *think* the change started in 2.1, which is what I’m running. With that… You get more info than in a partial feed, but it’s still cut off at the more tag. It seems all better now :)

Thanks for commenting, your solution may solve someone else’s issues!
