The Big Lumosity Re-Launch!
Lumosity’s brain-training membership site has just undergone a complete redesign. The interface is much cleaner, the game designs are more unified, and the training sessions are easier to follow.
The history and results section has been renamed and greatly simplified with a chart that compares your performance with others your age - something that I didn’t need to see! *gulp*
But overall, it should be much easier for new and elderly members to follow. I admit, though, I miss my charts, graphs and history… please bring them back, Lumosity!
Lumos Labs is also promising two new games this month: Playing Koi and Space Junk. I have no idea what they’ll be like, but who can resist a title like “Playing Koi”?
If you somehow aren’t familiar with Lumosity in spite of my endless pimping of it… There’s a free trial available if you click the graphic to the left.
Lumosity still ranks as my personal top pick in the brain training game market. The games are simple but fun, with increasing difficulty levels that get pretty darn challenging.
It’s reasonably priced, too… month to month memberships are available for 9.95, or you can save with a one year membership for 79.95.
And shhh…. a little bird whispered to me that there may be a special coupon code available for both new and renewing members, but I’m still checking on the details. I’ll let you know when/if I have more details. UPDATE: Get the discount details here: Good till Jan 21, 09
But coupon or not, go ahead and try the scientific brain training program by Lumosity. It’s fun and it improves memory and attention. Get started for free.

If you’re into brain training (Brain Age, etc), I do recommend Lumosity — IMO it’s probably the best out there, and really not that expensive. Worth checking out the trial.
The new Lumosity design is just great, too.
Hmmmm, I have suspicions. Is your endorsement a commission based endorsement or is it an honest endorsement? It looks like a commission based link to me, yet I see no such disclosure.
@ChasingSanity No need to be suspicious… it’s both an honest endorsement, and yes, it’s an affiliate link. The two aren’t mutually exclusive, and my reviews/endorsements are always more than honest. If you find an affiliate link on here, it’s a company and product I sincerely believe in.
Since I’ve been pushing Lumosity since their earliest beta launch, ( long before they had an affiliate program, much less my signing up for it last month) , and the graphic is pretty obviously an ad, I suppose I didn’t think too much about disclosure on this one.
“…it’s both an honest endorsement, and yes, it’s an affiliate link. The two aren’t mutually exclusive, and my reviews/endorsements are always more than honest.”
Agreed. As a reader I have choices. I can go straight to the company and buy direct, I can click an affiliate link from some cheesy review site or I can look to a site like MindTweaks which has a history of honest and balanced opinions - and then use their affiliate link.
As Tori mentioned, there is a huge graphic ad for Lumosity right smack in the middle of the post. (Great placement by the way.)
For me the cost is the same, and when I am researching purchases I rarely follow just one review anyway.
I understand the push and policing of disclosure - especially when there are sites who have never touched Lumosity yet are giving it rave reviews along side their aff links. This isn’t one of those sites. Tori actually uses the products and then writes about her experiences.
For that I am more than willing to buy through her link or click on her ad.
I second SleepWarrior above - I also recommend Lumosity, think it has a great price point and love the new design.
Thanks for the review, Tori.
For the next few days you can try a beta version of Playing Koi without signing up: http://games.lumosity.com/playing_koi.html
All the historical information and charts will be back very soon!
@Mike OMG. LOVE THE KOI GAME. SRSLY!
It’s gorgeous, and very relaxing.
(and yay! that the charts will return! I knew you were listening
)
@Erin Thanks for the vote of confidence : ) I actually debated a long time before doing any monetization of the blog at all. One of the turning points was analyzing my own online purchasing habits… if a particular blogger or site influenced me positively towards a product, and added real value, I found I’d actually search to see if they had an affiliate link. Then a few people started asking me if *I* had them, because they felt that way about my efforts here.
And I’m still a writer and designer at heart. When a “disclosure” statement feels to me like it changes or ruins the emphasis of a post, I’ll try and find a way around it. In this case, a blatant disclosure would have made it seem more like a sales pitch, than a relaunch announcement. I’d rather leave out the affiliate links than do that.
BTW, SleepWarrior’s site is worth a look. He’s got some great info goin’ on there.
There are many online brain games like fitbrain.com, sharpbrain.com happyneuron….etc. I hope if they ever came along and asked you to review their products you would be able to in a professional manner
@Rache Once again, I’m befuddled… Is there some sort of pin-the-tail-on-the-blogger-with-affiliate-ads meme going on? If so, TAG you’re it!
All of the sites you mentioned (and others) have been linked to here, though no, not given a full review (I dont consider this post a review, either). If I give every brain product out there a full review that’s all I’d do… and that’s really not what MindTweaks is about. Still, I do have a few lined up for this month, so stay tuned!
BTW, SharpBrains is not a brain-training site… they’re a market research firm, with a top notch online information portal.
(and if by chance this drive-by post was part of a particular online brain game site’s blog comment spam tactic… knock it off. I know who you are. )
