Random Reactions, Relaxations and Linkage

While I studiously work on my own mysterious MindTweaking project, (you’ll get a sneak peak soon) here’s a mix of mind tweakish links to keep you busy.

1. ReactionEffect: Addictive, strange and pointless, what could be a better waste of time on a thursday than bleeping rotating squiggles? (Other than endless bubble wrap, of course)

2.50 Fun Ways to Maximize Your Brain Fitness Pointed out to me by Kelly at the Nursing School Search site, this list is a good reminder of just how many easy and effective ways there are to kick our brains into gear. How can you *not* like a list that says “eat blueberry pancakes” and “play with a pet”?

3.MindHabits A unique twist on brain-games, MindHabits is focused on creating a more positive self image by training users to focus on smiling faces, positive words, and so on. The theory seems sound enough, and at 20 bucks (with a free demo available) it’s worth giving it a whirl. Oh, and some of the levels? Dang near impossible!

4.SimplyNoise Ok, ok… this is weird, but it’s a good sort of weird, and the name says it all… SimplyNoise simply creates noise. It’s an online noise generator - specifically white, pink, or brown noise. These are the sorts of sounds like those made by fans, tv static, rain, and ocean waves, and are often used in meditation CDs. Used as a background sound while you sleep, focus or meditate, they help drown out environmental distractions, as well as helping with migraines, tinnitus and so on. It’s oddly cool.

5. Top Chimp Lumosity has another free game trial available, and it’s hysterical. Remember Are You Smarter Than A Chimp? Well, they’ve polished it up into a full fledged game, where we can test our wits against chimps named Bubbles, Flo, Captain Baker (The space chimp!) and more. They’d love to get some feedback, so go and make a monkey out of yourself and them let them know.

(I can’t get past Captain Baker! Maybe if I bribed him with a banana?)

OMG was MindHabits EVER annoying. It had this insidious, repetitive music that just about drove me nuts. I tolerated it long enough to get through all the games at least once, then DUH! why didn’t I just turn off the sound on my computer. LOL
The second level of the bottom game was so hard it was amazing I scored anything. The other face game was hard to do as well and the one that was “All about me” well I read the instructions, played the game, had no idea what I was doing and scored a high score. Go figure

Maureen, I have no idea what they were thinking with that music!

It really is dreadful. I considered a warning about it, but somehow got distracted by the funky chia-sheep. Eventually I’ll get around to a real review of MindHabits - I do think there’s value in the concept, just needs better implementation.
