“What Type Are You” surveys usually leave me empty and unsatisfied. I know better, but sometimes I take them anyway, somehow hoping that filling in little dots in an online poll is going to reveal the inner depths of my psyche. I’m looking for a meat-and-potatoes bite of self-enlightenment, but wind up I’ve got only a mouth full of cotton candy: all fluff and no substance.

So I was surprised when I kept coming back to the “Spiritual Types” survey from ExploreFaith.com.

At only ten questions, it’s too simplistic to draw deep conclusions from the results - but the questions are interesting. Focused on how we respond to challenges of faith, they forced me to realize that what I may consider moments of doubt can also be seen as expressions of faith, or paths to deeper faith. It’s all in the perspective.

The survey is based around six types of spiritual personalities: companion, lover, thinker, maverick, seeker, believer. The descriptions are interesting, but not archetypal enough to really grab me.

Rather than personalities, they seem to be more ways of connecting, finding (or reaffirming) an individuals connection to the divine. Included in the types are those centered on relationships, intellectual processes, action, faith/trust, and emotions.

I seemed to relate to all of these paths/types in different ways, so that my experience is many layered. I’d like to explore the ideas in a more in depth fashion, looking at them both as paths of faith, and paths of understanding other elements of life, as well..

As an actual “test” its a washout, and can’t provide an answer… but the questions, ahh the questions…
