Once you leave your initial academic pursuits behind, you are, more likely than not, primed to enter the workforce. Your first job is an important milestone in your life, as it gives you a firsthand look into your professional pursuits. As you climb the ladder in your career, you will work alongside different types of colleagues.
Most of your cohorts can be great, and will support you in all of your endeavours. However, there may be a time when those who work alongside you may try to sabotage your goals. Whether this is intentional or not is beside the point; being aware of sabotage is crucial.
The following are seven signs you are being sabotaged at work. If you experienced any of these signs, it will give you a good indication as to how you should react.
Sign #1: Strange Questions
First and foremost, you should always take the time to get to know your co-workers. These are the people that you will be working alongside to accomplish your company’s goals. Asking fun, small questions to befriend them should be done, in order to develop a rapport. However, there are boundaries to know of.
For example, if your colleagues are asking you strange or unwarranted questions consistently, be careful. They may be trying to collect information to use against you in some capacity. Not only does this negatively affect your performance at work, but it can sabotage you in an undesirable manner.
Sign #2: Left Out Of Meetings
Being left out of meetings is a strong sign you are being sabotaged at work. You’ll seldom find anyone who enjoys company meetings on a daily basis. However, they are important to conduct, even if they can be a bit of a drag. Sometimes, your attendance will be mandatory, when attending these meetings. When it appears that you are being left to your own devices, there may be an issue.
Should this become much more apparent going forward, you’ll want to take it up with a senior-level individual. They may be able to give you insight into why this is happening. If not, you may have to conduct a third-party investigation in order to discover the root of the issue. In most cases, others may be trying to purposely sabotage you.
Sign #3: Suspicious Work Activities
Corporate investigation services will be needed if you are experiencing sabotage in a work environment. Not only can they come in with an unbiased lens, but they can, for the most part, discover the source of your problem. These investigators, who generally work privately, are experts in this area.
For example, they will conduct deep assessments in corporate settings, in order to prevent the potential for abuse. They will work with either an individual, or a larger party that hires them. With their services in tow, a complete and thorough investigation will lead to an answer for sabotage.
Sign #4: Constant Heat
All of us, in some capacity, will experience catching heat from a manager or senior-level worker at some point. These are the times where constructive criticism will come in handy, as it can improve your performance going forward. However, if you find yourself aggressively catching heat from co-workers all the time, make a mental note of it.
This is a telltale sign that your colleagues don’t appreciate you. When criticism is hurled towards you in a belittling way, it is usually done to mentally exhaust you. Make sure that you push back in the necessary way, so that you indicate that you will not be taken for granted. Or, take the issue up with human resources if need be.
Sign #5: Emotional Manipulation
As mentioned previously, cohorts that badger you with strange questions could be a sign of sabotage. This can also come in the form of emotional manipulation, which includes an abuse of power over a worker. When this dynamic is in play, the manipulator will try to control your every move at work.
Even if the move can purposely do damage to your own career, the manipulator will try it regardless. You need to ensure that someone else, whether in the office or outside it, hears your dilemma. Help is always available to you should you need it, especially in this situation.
Sign #6: Plagiarism
Co-workers who are envious of your skillset may try to sabotage you by imitating and copying your work. Should they try to take credit for what you have done, be adamant that you will be taking action immediately.
Sign #7: Saving All Correspondence
Sabotage, in a professional setting, can come in the form of digital information such as emails. Be sure to always save these notes, as they can be used as evidence when putting your case forward.
It is disheartening to discover that some of your colleagues would try to damage your professional endeavours. However, just know that it doesn’t have to be stressful when reacting to it. Help is always around the corner, in order to rectify this problem!
